September is awareness month for WHAT??

I can’t believe we’re dedicating an entire month to preventing childhood obesity. This MUST be serious!

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. Who knew there is such an occasion?

When I was a kid growing up in the early 70s in Queens NY, we never knew what obesity was, much less had a day, week or month dedicated to it!

Here is my kindergarten class picture…

Yes, that’s me—but you’ll have to guess which one is me in both pix!

Now go get YOUR kindergarten class picture and compare it to your KID'S class picture today. What do you see (or should I say, what don’t you see)?

You guessed it. Hardly any of our peers were overweight and rarely any were obese. Now probably almost half the kids in your child’s class are WAY overweight!

We’ve unfortunately expanded greatly in the past 30 years and so have our kids–so much so that kids are getting diseases that used to be only for the older and unfit population.

Enabling our kids

When I see parents driving their kids to bus stops that are 2 blocks from their homes, I know we're enabling this horrific trend. I see this every school day in sunny Orlando, Florida, where 360 days out of the year it is beautiful! Man, I can just imagine what goes on in rainy Seattle or freezing, snowy Buffalo, New York.

The American Council on Exercise (ACE), where I’m certified, says we can easily prevent many childhood diseases with proper diet and physical activity. Children can suffer from diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure—these aren’t just adult ailments.

According to ACE, many chronic diseases of adulthood have their beginnings in childhood. For example, it’s important for kids to build strong bones so that by the time they’re in their 20s, their peak bone density will be higher and their risk of osteoporosis decreased.

Free resources

ACE recently came out with some great (and free) resources for kids, called Operation Fit Kids.  You can learn more and download the course here.

ACE says that mom and dad are the best motivators to get their kids healthy, moving, and eating right. So set a good example for your kids and move your assets!
